Learners have been encouraged to plant trees in their communities as one way of averting the effects of climate change.

Programme Manager for LEAD-HER, Eunice Buleya said this during a tree planting exercise at Mombo Primary School in Chiradzulu where 104 tree seedling have been planted.

Buleya said it was important for learners to understand the importance of trees and what role they can play in ensuring that the environment is taken care of.

"Our role does not end here but we will also monitor the trees until they reach maturity stage," Buleya said.

One of the learners, Janet Jonas, a std 7 learner at Mombo Primary School said the trees would ensure that the school was protected during heavy winds and strong rains.

LEAD-HER is an organisation that is promoting girls to take on science subjects in Kholomana, Mombo, Thuchira, Lichenza and Namitembe primary schools in Chiradzulu.
